Molecular Knitting

I just found a wonderful site for the Biochemist-knitter in all of us. ChemKnits is full of custom patterns based on molecular structures, among other things. One of my favorites? The resveratrol wine cozy pictured to the right. ChemKnits provides not only a pattern, but also an explanation which justifies the geek out:

You may have heard about it on the news. Yes, this molecule has shown potential as a “fountain of youth and health” for mice. It is a natural substance found in many things including red wine. Of course, you would have to drink BOTTLES a day to consume enough of resveratrol for any biological effect. I am NOT encouraging you to take it as a supplement, but I was amused by the idea of putting it on a wine cozy!

ChemKnits also provides videos on knitting techniques (which is how I found her in the first place). So go, geek out. Have fun. But be ethical, ChemKnits does request that her patterns not be used for personal profit.
